THEATRE PRESENTATIONS

March 2010 Presentations

STAN CAREW & THE MAGPIES

March 14, 3 pm Matinee

People are use to being entertained by Stan Carew. For more than a decade he's been waking up
people in the Maritimes on Saturday and Sunday with his CBC Radio One program Weekend Programs. The calls and stories, the roller coaster ride of popular music, and Stan's relaxed style and sense of humour have made Weekend Mornings the highest rated program on the entire CBC network. But there is another side to Stan that people are becoming more familiar with. For the past thirty years he's been writing songs, quietly and strictly for his own amusement. In the spring of 2007
he put together a band of long-time musical friends and started doing concerts to raise funds for
small theatres and community halls around the Maritimes. The folks who attended came because
they were fans of Weekend Mornings, but went away fans of Stan Carew & The Magpies The Magpies take you on a journey through half a century of popular music, with whistle stops along the the way at pop, folk, blues, country and swing. The original songs are fresh and new, but sound familiar, and the Magpies play them with an infectious and enthusiasm that's hard to resist.

All seats $12.50

LYRICS AND HARMONIES

Sunday, March 28,  7:30 pm

Join Ian Sherwood, The Hupman Brothers & Cocoa Love Alcorn

For an intimate evening of lyrics and harmonies.

IAN SHERWOOD

Award winning songwriter, Ian Sherwood mixes catchy melodies and heart-breaking

stories with intricate guitar loops, saxophones and pop/rock/jazz grooves to create

music that has been described as “Traditional singer/songwriter style at it’s essence.”

His live show can make you weep for goats, sing to Jesus and hop a boxcar to the Yukon.

Ian is equally at home in front of a large festival audience or a quiet house concert.

His energetic stage show and honest presentation have quickly gained him recognition

as a solid performer, lyricist and player and garnered him

Music Nova Scotia’s 2008 Musician of the Year award.

HUPMAN BROTHERS

The Hupman Brothers are an important Nova Scotia band to watch.

Their original sound is played with superb musicianship and as brothers

they play as if one, knowing where the music is heading and how to make it their own.

Most often, Scott offers textured and percussive guitar and bass work and Ryan

performs exciting and intricate guitar solos. The lead vocals are richly expressive

and enhanced by clear and evocative back-up harmonies. This can be experienced

by listening to their first CD, released in 2007, which is a self-titled collection of 16 original songs.

Nominated by Music Nova Scotia for the Blues Album of the Year, this CD weaves lyrics,

melody and harmony into a seamless expression of the everyday love,

hurt and wonder we all share. Their stories are our stories

COCOA LOVE ALCORN

Coco Love Alcorn sings Joyful Soul; a sparkling alloy of jazz, soul and contemporary folk.

Her voice is hailed as 'extraordinary' (Vancouver Province), 'beautiful' (Canadian Musician)

and 'stunning' (Star Phoenix). As a performer she is always in the moment; playful

and witty, joyful and genuine, soulful and compelling. Some sweet career highlights

have been; a US tour opening for Ani DiFranco, a longstanding touring and recording

relationship with 54.40 and multiple song placements on popular American TV shows

such as The Dead Zone (usa Network) and The L Word (Showtime).

Chantal Kreviazuk, Valdy, Gonzales, Jesse Cooke & Loudon Wainwright III.
